Title of Study: A
Study of Sexual Minority Persons in the Workplace
are invited to participate in a research project being conducted by Christina
Rummell, a doctoral student in the Collaborative Program in Counseling
Psychology at the University of Akron, under the supervision of Dr. David Tokar,
Professor of Psychology.
purpose of this study is to better understand the ways that people share
information about themselves in the workplace. Approximately 100 employed
individuals will be participating in this study.
have been recruited for this study because you are age 18 or older, are
employed 15 or more hours per week, and do not
identify as heterosexual. The survey
itself will ask a series of questions which you will answer simply by clicking
on the answer that best describes yourself. Topics covered will include demographic
questions, questions regarding your sexual identity, your behavior in the
workplace, future expectations, and past experiences with discrimination. There are a total of 164 questions, which
should take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. After completion of the survey, you will be
directed to another website which will allow you to enroll in a drawing for one
of two $25 Amazon gift cards, OR to receive psychology course extra credit if
you are a student at the University of Akron.

Risks and Discomforts:
Since some of the topics asked about are related to gender and sexual
identity/orientation, it is possible that you may experience mild emotional
arousal as you consider your answers to the questions. In the unlikely event that you become upset

If you are in an immediate crisis, please call
benefits to you for participating in this study may be gaining a deeper
awareness of both yourself and your workplace behavior. However, you may receive no benefit from
participating in this study.
Right to Refuse or Withdraw:
Participation in this study is entirely voluntary and you may refuse to
participate or discontinue answering questions at any time without
penalization. However, our study depends
on participants’ complete answers, so please make a good faith effort to
complete the survey in its entirety unless the experience is actually causing
you emotional or other distress.
Confidential Data Collection: Data collection will be entirely
anonymous. We do not ask for any
information that identifies you during the survey. Please fill out your survey at a time when
you have privacy. After you have
completed the survey, you will be directed to another website where you can
enter identifying information to enroll in the drawing for one of two $25
Amazon gift cards, but the researchers will not be able to link that
information to any particular survey responses, thus ensuring that your
responses remain totally anonymous. Only
aggregate data will be used for research purposes.
Records: Researchers will never have access to the names or contact
information of participants who complete the online survey, so all data will be
completely confidential. All data will
be kept in password-protected computers and will be kept for at least three
years, as required by federal law. At
that point, aggregate data may be retained securely for analysis in future
research, but individual data may be destroyed.
